Rolla,
(pronounced:
Rah-la), was
voted one of the top 100 small communities in America. We are
located at the junction of I-44 and US Hwy 63, just 100 miles
southwest of St. Louis, 110 miles northeast of Springfield and
69 miles south of Jefferson City. The Rolla National airport is
only 15 minutes north on Highway 63 and there are
several
hotels and restaurants available.
Located at
1000 West 10th in Rolla is the
Phelps County Regional Medical
Center, a 242 bed regional facility serving south central
Missouri. The staff includes more than 128 physicians and
dentists. The hospital has a high-risk maternity center and a
Level III Trauma center.
Rolla is
the home of the
University of
Missouri - Rolla, a premiere
learning center in engineering and science. It encourages both
grad and undergraduate students to be involved in hands-on
learning and research. Our public school system, which is rated
AAA, averages a teacher / pupil ration of 1:21.43. Rolla also
offers extensive and comprehensive technical vocational training
at the
Rolla Technical Institute and Rolla Technical
Center, one
of the most modern in the Midwest. Training programs cover 12
area high schools as well as evening training for adults. Five
parochial schools, a state school and residential centers for
the handicapped are also here. Other professional training and
degrees are offered at
Webster
University,
Columbia
College,
Drury College and Metro Business College.
If you are
interested in fine arts, there are theatre, ballet and symphony
programs. The Remmers Lecturer & Artist Series, the Regional
Opera Company and
the Ozarks Actors Theatre keep our community
well entertained.
Some of
our area attractions include antique/craft stores, festivals, 6
area wineries, a museum with cars of yesteryear, the replica of
Stonehenge, and a visit to the University Missouri-Rolla campus
will show great contrasts between ancient and modern
engineering along with a mineral collection with specimens from
the 1904 World's fair and an Experimental Mine.
The Best
of Rolla is what surrounds it, 100,000 acres of state and
national wildlife parks,
|
|
wooded paths, horseback riding,
hunting, Ozark rivers for fishing and floating, numerous
caves
of all sizes to explore, lakes for bass fishing and Maramec
Springs for trout. Rolla has
the benefit of being situated
between the peacefulness of the Ozarks, the lights and music of
Branson and the excitement of St. Louis.
